Attention: NO BROADBAND ISDN cable!!
What sort of network interface card do I need?

I cannot send e-mails using my favorite mail client. Why?
The common port for sending e-mails (25, SMTP) is blocked for several reasons.
In order to send e-mails nevertheless, you should choose one of the following configuration:
(first method preferred)
- You can use SMTPS (Port 465, secured via SSL/TLS) and authorization using your user-name and password.
- You can use an alternative port in order to contact your SMTP server (usally port 587).
- You can use the mail-server of our provider (mail.belwue.de via port 587) for sending mails. Attention: this server only accepts e-mails from within the BelWue network (Universities in our region and Selfnet/WH-Netz)
Ask your provider which method is supported with your e-mail account and how to configure the mail client correctly.
What is Quota?
Quota is the amount of data transferred to you and from you. We only count the data that is transferred from and to the internet. There is a limit. The quota is 100 GB download (Internet-->You) and upload (You-->Internet) in sum, per month respectively. Only the internet transfers are counted to your quota. The transfers inside the dormitory network, to the University of Stuttgart (exception is VPN) as well as to the Hochschule der Medien is not accounted to your quota.
Please keep in mind that not only explicit file downloads increase your quota but also:
- regular surfing, especially watching videos on fun sites for instance
- VoIP-telephony
How can I get more quota?
You can't! We have to limit the download and upload volume in order to limit the total traffic count. Sorry, no exceptions!
I got a new computer, why does it not connect?
The switch, that you are connected to, saves your MAC (Media Access Control) address and only allows devices to connect to the network, that have the saved MAC address. Since MAC addresses are worldwide unique, your MAC address of your new computer will differ from the one of your first computer and that's why you cannot connect.
Please come to our support hours in order to do a MAC-reset or do it on your own using My.Selfnet , so your new MAC address can be saved so your switch port. The saving procedure is done automatically by connecting a turned on network device to your network jack. Please make sure, that your first computer is not connected to the network any more after the MAC reset, because otherwise its MAC address will be saved instead of the MAC address of the new computer.
A MAC-reset can only be requested at our office and not by e-mail.
I got an additional computer, why does it not connect?
During your registration you got an IP. When you connected your computer your MAC address was saved with this IP. When your new computer connects to the network its MAC address is unknown and access is denied. In order for your second computer to connect you have to acquire a second IP. This can be done in our support hours and with your id or you can do it yourself using My.Selfnet. Additional IPs are free of charge. The amount of quota remains constant.
I got an new IP via My.Selfnet but why does my Pc not connect?
If you got an Windows 7 or Vista PC it could happen that your new MAC is not transmitted. Please see our Windows Vista/7 - Trouble Sheet at the HowTo's Page to solve the problem.
